The Stirling Volunteer Fire Company was established in 1913 and has provided firefighting, fire prevention, and a variety of other emergency services every hour of every day since 1913.  OUR PRIMARY SERVICE AREA is all of Gillette, Meyersville, Stirling, and Homestead Park.  We also assist the Millington Volunteer Fire Co. in that community.

The Stirling Volunteer Fire Co. members respond to over 200 calls a year for help.  Some are to extingush fires in homes and businesses, some to extricate trapped occupants from motor vehicles involved in a variety of crashes, some involve search and rescue operations, and more.  They also perform fire prevention training in Gillette School and during Township summer recreation programs.  The 30 active members of the Fire Company accomplish their fire - rescue activities using a variety of equipment, ranging from normal firefighting gear to the Jaws of Life, Therma Imaging Cameras, heat detector guns, and  gas/noxious chemical detectors.

Our fire trucks are:

  • Engine #22 (dispatch #84-102) is a 2002 Smeal/Spartan pumper fire  engine delivered in February 2002.
  • Engine #24 (dispatch #84-104) is a 2008 Pierce pumper fire engine delivered in July 2008.  It is easily recognized by the large American flag painted on the front grill.  Pumpers are the first dispatched fire attack vehicles, which means they are wholly self-contained and carry all the hoses, ladders, pumps and a water supply to immediately begin fighting a fire when they arrive at the scene.
  • Rescue #26 (dispatch #84-152) is a 1998 Smeal/Spartan rescue truck and is the first fire apparatus to respond to motor vehicle accidents and heavy rescue or confined space rescue alarms.  It carries a variety of heavy rescue equipment, including the Jaws of Life.   The motto on this truck is  "Defenders of the South End", a reference to the south end of Morris County.
  • IC #20 (dispatch #84-162) is an Incident Command vehicle, a 2002 Ford Explorer is used by the fire chief or his designee to respond to alarms.
  • Engine #1 is a 1939 Diamond T Smokeater, 750 gpm pumper.  The Stirling Fire Co. purchased this new in 1939 for $5,000.  It was side-lined for several years due to mechanical reliability, but between 2007 and mid-2009 Stirling firefighter Frank Reilly and a friend of the fire company, John Stanik who specializes in restoring antique trucks, performed significant mechanical work on it and the the fire engine is now in excellent condition.  It is used in parades, at community functions, antique vehicle shows, and is a reminder to all of the Stirling Fire Co.'s rich heritage and long time dedicated service to the community.

Thermal Imaging Camera

The thermal imaging camera is a state-of-the-art tool for detecting very slight differences in temperatures within its range of view.  The firefighter uses it to detect the presence of human and animal life in a smoke filled area where ordinary visibility is impossible.  The camera works by displaying temperature variations in color between the body and the surrounding area.

In this photo of the thermal imaging camera in action, you can see the heat generated by the head and hands of a "victim" just to the right of the center of the screen.

The Stirling Fire Company received one of these $15,000 units about 8 years ago through a grant from the State of New Jersey and in 2009 the Long Hill Township purchased another for the fire company.

The Stirling Volunteer Fire Co. sponsors the annual NJ Firefighters Bicycle Race to raise funds for the St. Barnabas Burn Center Foundation at St. Barnabas Hospitol, NJ's only severe burn center.  The race is held the 4th Sunday each July in downtown Stirling.  Email the fire company for information.

JUNIOR FIREFIGHTER PROGRAM

The fire company also sponsors a Junior Firefighter program for young adults aged 16-21.

The Stirling Volunteer Fire Company supports itself through an annual fund drive and a variety of fund raising activities.  Please remember money you donate is used to provide fire protection and rescue services to you and your family.  We can't think of a better investment!

Please send your DONATION to:     Stirling Vol. Fire Co.;  P O Box 123;  Stirling NJ 07980
